Did you temporarily have a baked bean dish that was so good it could make people cry? This is what I wanted to do when I tried my first Smoked BBQ Baked Beans recipe. The taste is amazing, sweet and tangy with some heat on the finish.
If you’re looking for a delicious smoky side to your brisket or ribs, there’s no better choice than these BBQ Baked Beans. They’re easy to make from scratch and have the perfect balance of sweet and tangy flavors that are so popular with southern grillers.
There are many different variations for this dish, from Texan to Boston, but they always start with bacon and onions that are caramelized in a skillet. We then add our canned beans and added ingredients before slow and slow cooking over wood smoke for two to three hours.
This all-American favorite is slow and slow roasted over hickory for a thick layer of smoky flavor. It has everything we love about backyard cooking, including bacon, beer, and barbecue sauce.
Once done, they smell sweet from the wood while the long smoking time makes them thick and tender. Any added ingredients like onions and bacon are mixed in.

What are cowboy beans?
Cowboy beans are not to be confused with smoked grilled beans. Both consist of beans, meat and spices cooked in a smoker. However, cowboy beans typically use ground beef instead of bacon.
The flavor also differs because the cowboy beans have a more southwestern edge, similar to chili con carne. Both dishes use barbecue sauce, but chilli powder and other condiments are usually added to cowboy beans.
Best BBQ Beans Smoked Beans
Any large bean with a neutral flavor is a good choice for smoked baked beans. While traditional recipes call for kidney beans, you can use other large kidney beans such as large northern, butter, or pinto beans. You can even add some color with kidney beans or borlotti, just keep in mind that some beans will have different cooking times if you mix and match beans.
Another choice to make is between canned beans or dried beans. Using canned beans is much easier, but dry beans have better texture and flavor(as long as you remember to soak them overnight).
Smoking wood
The best woods for smoking baked beans are soft, fruity woods like apple and cherry that don’t overwhelm the beans. If you want an intense and smoky flavor, you can add some hickory or oak bits to the wood mix.
The only wood you shouldn’t use when smoking baked beans is mesquite. The intense smoky flavor will overwhelm the beans.
