Review of Traeger Silverton 620 & 810 Pellet Grill [Special Edition]

The Traeger Silverton 620 is a special edition pellet grill for the brand that has been at the forefront of modern pellet grilling for years. It’s hard to find, but is it worth the extra cost and effort to find out? Our test report takes a closer look at what the device has to offer.

Traeger Silverton Special Edition Grille

Traeger has long been the torch for pellet smoker grills , and the brand was one of the first to champion the style of backyard cooking in the late 20th century.

How do Traeger latest offerings hold up given that other brands are now offering stiff competition?

One of the most recent additions is the Silverton, which was launched as a special edition in 2018.

This is a Traeger Special Edition Grill that was a limited edition. It’s worth noting that it’s no longer in production as far as I know, but I see one popping up on second-hand sites from time to time.

Is the update an improvement? How does it compare to other brands of pellet smokers? Let’s take a closer look at this Traeger Silverton Grill review.

Versatile BBQ Cooking: Hot and fast or low and slow, the Traeger Pro Series 22 Pellet Grill offers 6-in-1 versatility to grill, smoke, bake, roast, braising and juicing to perfection.

Stainless Steel Construction

The Traeger Silverton is a great upgrade for the Traeger 22 series, which has been one of their best sellers for the last few years.

As part of this new and improved model, Traeger has incorporated stainless steel construction into the cookbox. This will remove the layer of dust that builds up on the inside of your grill when you grill, which is a welcome feature in my book!

Inside the chamber are double cast-iron cooking grates protected by a tough, clear, non-toxic coating. These offer two tiers for a total of 600 square inches of cooking space, giving you more than enough space to cook most classic grill and grill dishes.

Large Hopper Capacity

Where the 22-series had an 18-pound hopper capacity, Silverton dwarfs it with a 25-pound offering. This equates to about 5 gallons of pellets, making it one of the largest hopper volumes we’ve seen in years.

Not only that, it also has a pellet dump door to help you recycle pellets for your grilling sessions and help keep the hopper clean.

The door of the pellet chute itself is not new, but the operation is new. Traeger modified the design of the inclined hopper to better direct pellets out of the hopper and keep the hopper clean.

Gen 2 Motor Series

Your auger is equipped with Traeger Gen 2 series motors, previously used primarily in their high-end pellet grills like the Timberline.

In practice, Gen 2 motors have many advantages over Gen 1. They are DC powered and feature the direct drive D2 brushless worm motors. In reality, this is about 8 times the power of their Gen 1 auger engines.

They also have obstacle sensors that can detect any collection of unwanted pellets and reverse to eliminate the hazard.

It’s a huge improvement and we love it, it’s featured on a number of limited edition pellet grills.

It comes with a different heatsink than we’ve had from Traeger in the past, which helps prevent warping after normal use.

Grilling Power-Energy

The Silverton is double lined to retain warmth and maximize durability. This additional heat retention helps the 610 and 820 grills achieve a rating equivalent to 32,000 BTU of cooking power.

It features a revised “Downdraft” ventilation system on select models. Gone is the chimney, instead of a ventilation system that directs smoke and exhaust air to the side.

The door of the pellet chute itself is not new, but the operation is new. Traeger modified the design of the inclined hopper to better direct pellets out of the hopper and keep the hopper clean.

Also move the drain from the outside of the chamber to the inside. This helped eliminate a real mistake of mine which was that the drain coming out of the grill was dumping a lot of grease onto the floor or the ground around the grill which isn’t that hygienic.

The Silverton Funnel System is now located inside the unit and can be accessed through the doors at the base of the unit. This keeps everything cleaner and safer when grilling.

Heat Shield

Traeger also reinvented its heat shield system for Silverton. Vorbii is your Model 22 boxy shield, and in its place is a rounded shield that sits like a rainbow over the firebox.

Its shape means it should resist warping much more efficiently.

The drip pan WILL then be placed above the heat exchanger but below the cooking grates and can easily catch runoff water and direct it down the drain.

The Silverton has porcelain-enamelled grates for good heat distribution and reduced flare-ups, although it comes with an additional cast-iron grate insert that sits on top of the porcelain for better browning of the meat. It’s one of those things that I didn’t know it was supposed to be until I saw it. Why don’t more grills offer this?

There is good clearance between the main racks and the warming rack, giving you plenty of room to work.

The overall size of the grill is about 18 inches deep and 24 inches wide, meaning capacity isn’t an issue for the Silverton. Whole turkeys, beer can chicken, whole ham. Anything goes.

Does the Traeger Silverton Have WiFire?

The good news is that the Silverton 610 and 820 models are Wi-Fi enabled. The Silverton syncs with Traeger WiFire app, allowing you to remotely monitor and control your pellet grill. It might sound like a gimmick, but you can’t underestimate the convenience this adds to your grill.

How to Clean the Traeger Silverton

Maintenance and cleaning should be a priority for your pellet grill. Just like a car, YOU need to keep things clean to ensure you get the best performance over the long term.

You’ll Need:

  • Grill Cleaner: I’m a big fan of Traeger All Natural Cleaner(Buy on Amazon)
  • 6-in-1 painter’s tool: The Red Devil Tool is easy to use and quite cheap(Buy on Amazon)
  • Mini Vacuum Cleaner: Pellets can generate a lot of dust and cause clogging. A small vacuum cleaner like the handyman is a handy tool to always have with you(Buy it on Amazon).

Begin by emptying the pellet hopper of any visible pellets or debris. The best way to do this is to open the pellet door and empty the contents of the funnel into a bucket. We can reuse them later to keep the granules from tiring. Be sure to store the granules in an airtight container to protect from moisture and moisture.

Open the smokehouse and scrape the cooking grates with your brush. Start with the top racks and work top to bottom, removing any excess dirt or crumbs. After that, carefully flip each rack over and scrape the bottom off of each one. Pay special attention to the temperature sensor in your grill and be careful not to bump or damage it. Remove the racks completely when you’re done.

Now to the grill chamber. Use your painter’s tool to lightly scrape away any excess dirt or debris on the inside of the chamber. Don’t worry about parts clumping together. Use the tip of the paint tool to work in hard-to-reach nooks and crannies in the chamber. Let all the crumbs and dirt fall to the bottom of the chamber for a MUST to clean up when you’re done. Use a dry cloth to clean the interior surfaces.

Remove the drip tray, pan and heat deflector. Again, just scrape lightly with the painting tool and wipe clean with a towel. Once the parts are removed, use the vacuum to clean all surfaces and areas of the grill, including the pot and funnel. The more ash you can remove, the better.

Once this is done, place any removed pieces back on the grill. Fill the hopper with pellets.
